Haldane UK is celebrating its 30th year of 5 axis CNC timber machining by revolutionising its entire approach to advanced timber machining. The move comes after a two-year development and testing period which has seen the company transform the entire process from surveying through to a new dry jointing system.
Haldane was the first company in the UK to offer 5 axis CNC timber machining services and its experience has gained industry aspect for its ability to machine any shape or profile from any commercially available timber.
The new approach will enable Haldane UK to offer a faster and more competitive service to clients as well as improve the quality of its service.
Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, said “Since we bought our first 5 axis machine in 1992, we have made steady improvements to our CNC techniques, however in 2009 we recognised that we needed a step change to take us to the next level. This required a radical change to virtually every process in the system and an investment to the tune of £300,000.”
One of the biggest parts of the investment has been a revolutionary new drawing and programming package which has been developed exclusively for Haldane UK and will dramatically improve the speed and precision of the process.
Forrester continued, “The drawing and programming element is one of the most critical and time-consuming elements in the CNC process however this revolutionary technology powered by high powered processors allows us to draw, programme and simulate the machining in a fraction of the time it previously took.”
The company is also using laser technology to carry out its surveys for absolute precision prior to programming. This enables the entire staircase and bespoke timber handrail to be surveyed and presented in one file which enables Haldane to offer the full system dry jointed prior to despatch.

Haldane UK Has Completed a Major Timber Handrails Contract for 27 Apartments in Manchester
Haldane UK has secured the contract to manufacture and install continuous timber handrails for 27 luxury apartments in Manchester.
The project demonstrates Haldane UK’s ability to accommodate large projects thanks to its increased manufacturing capacity with no fewer than 5 CNC machining centres.
Working in conjunction with one of the UK’s leading architectural metalwork specialists, Haldane will manufacture the bespoke profile handrail measuring 62mm x 35mm in Sapele.

When it comes to replacing existing timber columns, many woodturners are restricted by the size of they are able to comfortably turn, however, Haldane UK has can manufacture virtually all timber column sizes.
And it has demonstrated its full capability by manufacturing and supplying two columns at 2550mm in height by 450mm diameter.
The timber column sizes were designed to be exact replicas of the existing columns with an elliptical profile and collars to the top and bottom and supplied in 2 sections to fit around a structural steel pillar. The columns were made in 4 sections with separate collars to provide a perfect finish.
Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained “We can comfortably turn solid columns to a maximum of 1900mm in length and 500mm in diameter. However, when it comes to larger items such as with this project, we can look at alternative approaches to deliver the same high standard of finish.”
Haldane UK has demonstrated its expertise as specialist Timber Louvres Manufacturers by producing over 330 timber louvre screens for a major residential development in the South of England.
The louvre screens were manufactured from sapele which had been pressure treated to provide essential protection from the elements.
The project which was split in two phases to meet the construction schedule required two different heights of screens and various widths all featuring a simple square section sitting on square battens.
The key to delivering the project was the consistency and quality of each louvre screen with each of the 28,000 screws lining up perfectly – all to meet the demanding lead times.

As specialists in Turning, Haldane UK was recently approached and asked if they could machine a contemporary solid cylindrical table base with deep grooves for one of the country’s leading shopfitting companies who was working on the fit-out of a large casino in Glasgow.
Expertly constructed by time served craftsmen, this project once again demonstrated the unrivalled quality and accuracy that Haldane is capable of producing.
And with experience in wood turning since 1946, Haldane was delighted to manufacture the 32 table base in European Oak using a unique jointing system that used the weight of the table to provide the stability.
A naturally heavy timber, European is an ideal choice for a table base that needs to be sturdy and steady however one disadvantage of using European Oak is that it contains tannic acid which can corrode fittings and in turn stain the wood surface.
Haldane’s jointing system provided the perfect solution with an immaculate and seamless finish without the need to use any fixings.

Haldane UK has provided the perfect finishing touch for this luxury new build home on an exclusive private estate by manufacturing and installing the timber handrails and metal balustrade on the marble staircase.
The marble-clad concrete staircase provided a striking contrast to the decorative metal balustrade and European Oak handrail which was French polished to match other finishes in the home.
Haldane manufactured over 20 linear metres of continuous curved & spiral handrail ensuring the 74 x 50mm profiled section was perfectly maintained throughout the twists and turns of the stair.
The handrail rises flawlessly up to the atrium area and continues along the horizontal before curving into the wall.
