CHOOSING YOUR TIMBER

Choosing the right timber for your project can often be a little daunting - especially when you are dealing with a natural material which can see changes in colour and graining.

Accoya

Accoya is a modified wood that has been engineered to provide a durable, stable and versatile material that comes with a 50-year warranty for above ground applications and a 25-year warranty for in-ground uses or in freshwater. This makes it the perfect wood for external applications. Its light consistent finish provides the perfect base for coatings.

Iroko

Iroko is predominately used externally thanks to its durability and natural protective oils, however it will need to be treated with external grade varnish. Originally yellow in colour when machined, the colour quickly changes to golden brown and then dark brown. Often used as a replacement for teak.

American Black Walnut

Rich, luxurious timber. Perfect for handrails and furniture. Lovely character with a slightly open grain. Colour generally a dark chocolate brown but can vary to light browns and even creamy in the sapwood.

American Cherry

Lovely warm timber but can vary in colour from reddish-brown to either a deep red or red/brown. May require staining or French polishing to deliver a more even colour.

Sapele

The modern replacement for Mahogany, Sapele is reddish-brown in colour with a fairly random grain appearance. Can have a fair amount of colour variation but finishes well.

Wenge

Very dark brown in colour with almost black veins but may feature distinctive pale bands to provide a unique appearance, making it popular for furniture and turned items. Highly durable and can be used externally.
