Handrails Edinburgh Usher Hall

Haldane UK has manufactured and installed almost 150 linear metres of its stunning Sapele handrails in Edinburgh’s Usher Hall for the stunning spiral staircase to the rear of the historic building.

Working in conjunction with Edwards Engineering who were the architectural metalworkers on the project, Haldane used its advanced digitising technology to measure and plot the exact flow of the core rail that the timber handrail would sit on.

And demonstrating that even a simple 45mm diameter can look stunning, Haldane precision manufactured the spiral and curved handrail to the rear staircase and its expert installation teams ensured a perfect finish that is worthy of a building with such a reputation.

Such was the quality of the works that Haldane was then appointed to manufacture and install the timber handrails and transition components to the entrance area.

Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained “We have been delivering complex, continuous handrails since 1992 and have established unrivalled experience and knowledge in this area which enables us to take on any job with full confidence that we will be able to deliver on our promises.”

He continued, “It is one thing to have the survey equipment but the real skill involved is being able to take the information we produce from the digitiser and smooth out the inevitable bumps that metalwork can throw up at the programming and machining stages to prevent additional works on site.”

Timber Handrail Manufacturer, Haldane UK has completed a major joinery package for a high end residential project in central London which saw the transformation of an Art Deco hotel into 48 luxury apartments over 8 storeys.

Haldane manufactured and installed over 85 linear metres of 110mm x 83mm bespoke timber handrails in American Black Walnut which was rebated to sit atop a double skin frosted glass balustrade.

Haldane also manufactured an American Black Walnut handrail with a large profile measuring 110mm high x 310mm wide to feature a leaning rail allowing plants and foliage to be adorned in the atrium area.

Luxury Handrails London

Haldane UK has completed a major spiral handrail project in London’s trendy Campden Hill area.

Haldane was contracted to manufacture and install stunning American cherry handrails to the five story luxury town houses which are being valued over £6-7 million each with one house in phase 2 already reserved for a price of £12million.

Each of the homes feature elegant staircases with stainless steel balustrades to the lower ground and first floors and then flow seamlessly into a spiral staircase which provides access to the remaining upper floors.

The smooth flow of the handrail is achieved by a combination of raking wreaths, 90°bends and ramp components manufactured with Haldane’s unrivalled machining skills which achieve accuracies of up to 4/1000 of an inch.

For that finishing touch the stair case features profiled ends which are machined to ensure the luxury feel is maintained.

The houses also feature a rear staircase from the first floor terrace to the pool area on the lower ground, however, as you would expect in such luxury homes, the handrails feature 40mm diameter European Oak with stunning swan necks and ramps.

Managing Director, Forrester Adam, said “We particularly enjoy working on these types of contracts where luxury is the key ingredient that pervades throughout the home and the attention to detail is of prime importance. From the type of timber featured through to the intricate components in both the feature and rear staircases, no expense has been spared.”

Stunning Oak Handrail For Top Scottish Architect

Haldane UK has manufactured and supplied its luxury timber handrails for the stunning Edinburgh home of one of award winning architect, Lorn Macneal.

The project required Haldane UK to manufacture over 28 linear metres of 45mm circular handrail manufactured from FSC accredited European Oak.

Haldane UK’s expertise in 3 dimensional CNC machining was demonstrated by manufacturing the bends and complex transitions on solid pieces to achieve a truly continuous handrail to befit the contemporary interior design.

To ensure the handrail sat perfectly atop the structural glass balustrading, Haldane precision manufactured a 20mm x 15mm rebate to all pieces, including the ramps, bends and precision.

Initially a little unsure about the costs of opting for switching from the traditional straights and mitres approach, Lorn was delighted with the final outcome, commenting:

“I bit the bullet and went for it rather than using sawn mitres joints. Thank goodness my impulses towards thrift were quelled as the result is brilliant. Thank you so much”

Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained “Whilst we tend to be associated with complex handrail profiles and components, our expertise in delivering continuous diameter handrail is unrivalled and cost effective.”

The finished project speaks for itself and demonstrates the true impact of continuous handrails.

Spiral Handrail For Mayfair Town House

Haldane has added the perfect finishing touch to an opulent 5 storey town house in London by manufacturing and installing bespoke spiral handrail which was French polished to provide a luxurious ebonized finish.

No expense was spared to deliver the feature staircase with exclusive Italian Marble, bespoke mild steel metalwork with custom paint, the use of Wenge, one of the most expensive commercially available timbers and a stunning chandelier centrepiece.

Haldane worked in conjunction with Elite Metalcraft who were commissioned to deliver the staircase.

Elite manufactured the superb decorative mild steel balustrade which sat upon polished Italian marble tread and risers.

Haldane then used its digital survey technology to create an exact 3D replication of the metalwork to enable it to manufacture over 30 linear metres of spiral and curved handrails and associated transition components.

The staircase also featured custom volutes at each landing to provide a fantastic unique feature.

Spiral Basement Handrail

Haldane UK  has answered the call of a main contractor by replacing the timber basement handrail to the spiral staircase in a new multi-million pound Scottish mansion.

Haldane received a phone call on a Friday evening from the main contractor’s Project Manager who was appalled at the quality of the handrail their existing suppliers had fitted.

With a proud reputation for delivering superior quality and an uncompromising approach to defects, the main contractor quickly addressed the problem and called in Haldane UK.

Instead of a smooth flowing continuous handrail which was machined to fit the sweeping core rail of the metalwork, the handrail had been machined with a small curve and then forced into position using fixings to create the spiral. This was causing balusters to buckle due to the pressure being placed on them.

And when you spend a few million pounds on building a luxury home, you expect every aspect of the property to be absolutely perfect.

Thanks to the swift, decisive action of the Project Manager, Haldane were on site first thing on the Monday morning to measure up. Within 9 days Haldane had completed the machining and installation of 16 linear metres of solid ash handrails, 10 linear metres of straight handrail and 6 linear metres of horizontal curves.

The luxury home is the third contract in 6 weeks that Haldane has been asked to correct sub-standard handrails and Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, is becoming concerned at the growing number of poor installations they are coming across.

He explained “Unfortunately too many contractors claim to be able to machine complex spiral and helical handrails at budget costs. But when it comes to the crunch, they deliver inferior solutions that simply do not come up to scratch and cause major headaches at these critical final stages of the build.”

He continued, “The fact of the matter is that unless you hand carve individual components which can be a long and unpredictable process, you need a 5 axis CNC machine to be able to produce spiral handrail – especially the transitions which can be extremely complex.”

Haldane has developed a reputation as the UK’s market leader for continuous handrails and supplies a large number of specialist spiral stair companies across the country who have come to rely upon the quality of products and service they deliver.

Forrester concluded, “As handrails are often one the last items to be fitted, there is a huge risk in opting for what may seem to be a cheaper option only to find that the whole project is compromised with sub-standard handrails. All too often the main contractor incurs penalties for missed deadlines and faces the wrath of the client.”
