Oak Handrail For Glass Balustrade

Haldane UK has manufactured and installed a 50mm diameter American White Oak handrail to sit atop a glass balustrade for a luxury property in the North of England.

The curved stone staircase rises to a gallery area on the first floor with the structural glass panels allowing the light to flow through the area.

Haldane ensured their handrails fitted perfectly on-site by carrying out a 3D digital survey of the glass panels which allows their state of the art 5-axis CNC technology to machine the rebated handrail to precise accuracies.

As well as the curved handrail, Haldane also manufactured and installed the wall rail which was fixed via wall brackets.

Designer Handrails For Stairs In Kent

Haldane has manufactured, supplied and installed the continuous handrails for a luxury home in Kent.

The staircase project was part of a complete refurbishment of the property and required Haldane to carry out a full 3D survey of the custom made metalwork to enable a perfect fit first time at installation.

Haldane worked closely with the contractor to optimise the layout of the metalwork and help to achieve the flow of the handrail and balustrades.

The bespoke profile handrails were made from America White Oak and traditionally French polished on site by the client.

The continuous handrail sweeps effortlessly round the corner of the staircase before levelling out onto the horizontal handrail for the atrium.

Haldane also created a wreathed volute to provide the perfect finish to the feature staircase.

The client was delighted with the result commenting, “From templating to fitting, the service was second to none. I loved the way your handrail sections glided straight onto the metal work with no fuss.  I’m sure you will agree it looks great!”

Cross Banded Handrail Replacement

Haldane UK has transformed the handrail of a Victorian home by replacing the existing cross banded handrail which featured missing sections of the cross banding with a solid handrail designed to provide an exact replica of the existing profile.

Cross banding was a technique used in Victorian and Georgian times to create a profile by fixing hardwood moulding to the top of the handrail, often to disguise the softwood core section.

However, the existing handrail was missing some sections of cross banding and due to the size and design of the moulded section as well as the French polishing required, it was more cost effective to replace the entire handrail.

After removing the existing handrail and digitising the core rail, Haldane manufactured and installed the solid timber profile measuring 67mm x 48mm a featuring a combination of straight and spiral handrail with a 90degree bend transition pieces and a raking to horizontal wreath. The staircase was finished with a wreathed volute.

Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained “It can be relatively straight forward to replace sections of cross banding on straight handrail however, as in the case with this project, when trying to fix spiral sections and transition pieces, it can be more problematic and not achieve the desired level of finish.”

This view was also reinforce by the client who commented, “We are absolutely delighted with the results. We have an 1840 property and the rail looks like it has been there forever. In fact it is nicer than the original!”

Bespoke Mahogany Handrails For Feature Staircase

Haldane has manufactured and supplied bespoke handrails for a luxury home featuring Brazilian Mahogany, one of the world’s most expensive commercially available timbers.

As a highly rare timber, Haldane used its network of suppliers to source a stocks of Brazilian Mahogany from a company which was holding old timber stocks and therefore was able to demonstrate the integrity of its supply.

Haldane carried out the project on a supply only basis working closely with the architectural joinery firm which was manufacturing and installing the staircase and balustrades.

The bespoke profiled handrail follows the contours of the staircase which turns beautifully through 180 degrees. Beginning with a stunning wreathed volute, the handrail rises and turns to flow seamlessly into the atrium area where Haldane also manufactured the horizontal handrails and curves.

Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, commented “Quality and precision is absolutely critical when it comes to machining exotic timbers such as Brazilian Mahogany as any mistakes or slight imperfections can prove to be costly – or in this case, where any additional timber required would simply be unavailable.”

He continued, “We work with many specialist joinery companies on a supply only basis whether it’s manufacturing and supplying the complex aspects of the project, working with exotic and rare timbers or simply providing them with additional manufacturing capacity.”

DDA Compliant Handrails

Haldane has ensured a partially sighted pupil can safely enjoy school life by installing DDA compliant handrails to all stairways in a Scottish School.

Haldane manufactured and installed over 100 linear metres of 50 x 38mm oval handrails with a flat base to accommodate the 90mm accessibility brackets which positioned it 65mm from the wall.

To comply with the DDA regulations the handrails were also stained black to increase visibility against the pale walls and then coated with a hard lacquer for the level of protection required for a school.

To show the stair has reached a landing, the handrail flows into a horizontal at the landing before returning to the wall and to enable the pupil to know what to expect, the horizontal runs for 600mm at the top and only 300mm at the bottom.

Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained “Our experience in installing DDA compliant handrails is second to none and thanks to our machining capability and our project management expertise, we were able to turn this around very quickly.”

He continued, “The nature of the project required us to machine the handrail and be on site within 10 days of order.”
