Haldane UK has shown exactly why it’s recognised as the UK’s leading architectural joinery company by using its state of the art laser surveying equipment and 5 axis CNC technology to recreate intricate carved spindles with a corbel effect.
The client had originally contacted Haldane for part of the contract and was looking for an aspect to be hand carved, however after discussing the project and sending a photograph of the existing component, the Haldane team confirmed that the level of detail could be machined in a fraction of the time.
Haldane’s laser surveying technology enabled the sample component to be digitally profiled in a matter of hours to extraordinary detail, before being passed for programming and tooling.
The machining team then carried out a number of sample tests to perfect the process and finishing before progressing with the order of 60 units.
Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained “We have now completed a number of projects where we have been required to recreate the intricate carvings of timber components, including the work we carried out in the restoration of Windsor Castle.”
He continued, “This latest project was the first time we were able to use our laser surveying technology to establish a new level of details which can be passed to our programming team. By breaking down the component we were able to machine the corbel section with the 5 axis CNC machines, whilst the fluted spindles section was turned.”

This latest project saw Haldane manufacture two radiator covers in the same design but with one in solid oak and one in European Walnut.

Haldane UK has produced twenty individual carvings each with its own Arabic writing in European Walnut for a major client in the South of England.
The panels were produced using Haldane’s market-leading CNC machines which deliver the ultimate in precision in quality, however, the project was not without its challenges.
Each carving required to be individually programmed by Haldane’s team of experienced programmers working from CAD drawings supplied by the project’s design team.
With the timber specified as European Walnut, which tends only to be available in relatively smaller lengths and widths and waney edged, Haldane’s production team were required to rip the timber and laminate together to create panels at the required size and thickness.
Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained “European Walnut looks exceptional when it is finished however as the timber comes from fruit trees, they tend to be smaller and more bowed than other timbers which mean that we encountered a relatively high degree of wastage.”
And whilst each panel was machined on the CNC machines, every panel was hand-finished by one of Haldane UK’s master craftsmen using traditional hand carving techniques to ensure a perfect finish.
Forrester continued, “We ran a number of tests at the initial stages of production and whilst the machines were coping well with the intricacy of the carving, we felt that there were some areas that could cause issues and the hand finishing was the most effective method of delivering the level of quality Haldane is renowned for.”
He concluded, “This has been a fascinating project to complete with challenges to overcome at every stage of the process, however, it is the kind of thing that Haldane is set up perfectly to deliver.”
Haldane UK has added a touch of grandeur to a luxury Essex home with the completion of this superb fantail European Oak staircase featuring 70mm bespoke spindles and a profiled handrail measuring 100 x 75mm.
Working in conjunction with Gary Curnick Joinery, Haldane UK manufactured the spindles, newel posts and profiled handrails to create the fabulous feature staircase and balcony area.
Haldane created a bespoke spindle based on a sketch provided by the client and these were complemented with matching 150mm newel posts.

In fact, we receive a large number of enquiries from people who want new spindles to match an existing design – for a replacement or to restore the staircase to its formal grandeur.”
Haldane UK has completed stair cladding project at a development of luxury houses on the Avenel Estate outside Glasgow with the timber cladding of a concrete stair which has resulted a stunning feature staircase.
Designed by the internationally acclaimed architect, Hugh Petter, from Robert Adam Architects and overseen by Thomas Robinson Architects, the Avenel Estate is a collection of six luxurious private dwellings set beautifully in eight acres of secluded gardens and mature woodland.
The initial home includes the pinnacle of quality fixtures and fittings as standard and is finished with a stunning feature staircase manufactured from poured concrete which Haldane clad with plywood and solid American White Oak panels and treads to create the perfect canvas for the bespoke balusters and handrail.
The ornate profiled handrails were manufactured in Sapele and featured a combination of transitions, ninety degree bends and open cap bends with a stop end.
The bespoke designed balusters and newel posts were manufactured from Sapele and painted in white to provide a perfect contrast between the Oak treads and the Sapele handrails.
Haldane also manufactured the oak architraves and bespoke curved mouldings to provide the perfect finishing touch to the overall staircase.
The first floor of the property has a stunning octagonal gallery area that looks down to the entrance hall providing a superb feeling of light and space and features Haldane’s bespoke oak base rail, white painted balusters and profiled Sapele handrails.

Haldane UK has demonstrated their experience in manufacturing and installing wooden stair treads with its latest project which required them to machine over 100 treads featuring acid aged brass inserts and an anti-slip coating system.
Haldane used their timber machining expertise and their 5 axis CNC technology to create 24 No 28mm winder treads in European Oak measuring 1107mm long and 700 mm at their widest point.
The staircase also featured 84 No standard treads measuring 1107mm x 250mm.
All of the treads were treated with the Enduro XLA anti-slip coating system and featured 3 strips of 3 mm brass which had been acid aged to provide a contrast against the oak timber as well as to prevent slipping on the stairs.
Haldane also machined out 2 locator channels to the bottom of the tread to sit perfectly on the metalwork and provide added protection from any movement on the tread.

Haldane has manufactured and installed the American Black Walnut stair treads and landing for the feature staircase in the headquarters of a major multinational corporation.
The timber treads were designed to fit perfectly into the staircase and featured brass anti-slip inserts.
Haldane also manufactured the timber landings to include ‘V’ grooves to allow for any natural movement within the material.

Haldane UK has demonstrated its experience and expertise in timber technology by manufacturing Accoya timber columns for the refurbishment of a Victorian property.
The columns taper from 200mm diameter to 150mm with bespoke 250mm turnings fitted to each end to achieve a finished size of 2.2metres.
Accoya Timber is a modified softwood which offers outstanding durability and stability to rival or exceed the best tropical hardwoods.
Its unique properties can reduce swelling and shrinkage by over 75% whilst offering superior resistance to UV degradation – making it ideal for exterior use, especially for projects requiring a paint finish.
And from a machining perspective, the consistency of quality and the stability throughout the timber, makes it an excellent material to work with.

Haldane UK has recreated an entire Victorian handrail and balustrade for a client who was extending an Aberdeen hotel and was looking to match the existing staircase.
The bespoke timber machining specialist has developed a reputation as a timber restoration specialist with a portfolio of historic properties, including the refurbishment of Windsor Castle, where it manufactured layered balustrade in the Prayer Room and latticework in the Great Hall.
Working from photographs of the existing components and architects drawings of the new staircase layout, Haldane produced 3D drawings of each component and the exact representation of the Victorian handrail profile before beginning the manufacturing process.
Haldane used a combination of their 5 axis CNC machining expertise, woodturning and moulding solutions to create the ornate 120mm square newel posts as per the existing design, including the unique ball décor top.

The final Victorian handrail was designed to match the existing handrail with a 92mm x 62mm profile with a 55mm rebate to accommodate the spindles.
