Designer Handrails For Stairs In Kent

Haldane has manufactured, supplied and installed the continuous handrails for a luxury home in Kent.

The staircase project was part of a complete refurbishment of the property and required Haldane to carry out a full 3D survey of the custom made metalwork to enable a perfect fit first time at installation.

Haldane worked closely with the contractor to optimise the layout of the metalwork and help to achieve the flow of the handrail and balustrades.

The bespoke profile handrails were made from America White Oak and traditionally French polished on site by the client.

The continuous handrail sweeps effortlessly round the corner of the staircase before levelling out onto the horizontal handrail for the atrium.

Haldane also created a wreathed volute to provide the perfect finish to the feature staircase.

The client was delighted with the result commenting, “From templating to fitting, the service was second to none. I loved the way your handrail sections glided straight onto the metal work with no fuss.  I’m sure you will agree it looks great!”

Timber Columns Restoration Project

Haldane UK has demonstrated its breadth of timber machining expertise with the restoration of 8 timber columns for the entrance to a Victorian property in Aberdeen.

The existing columns were showing severe signs of rotting and were compromising the structural integrity of the entrance area.

Haldane manufactured the timber columns from D30 structural grade American White Oak which is kiln-dried to deliver an 11% moisture content.

To deliver the size of the 250mm diameter columns which tapered down to 210mm, Haldane laminated up smaller blocks of American White Oak with additional screws and dowlings for additional strength.

The components were then turned in Haldane UK’s 24,000 sq facility in Scotland before being installed on-site and primed by their in-house installation team.

Haldane is one of the UK’s largest industrial woodturners with its unique capability to turn sections of timber up to 1900mm in length and up to 500mm in diameter.

However, their experience and expertise in specifying timber to suit the environment and usage of each projects were instrumental in delivering the optimum solution.

Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained “Woodturning has been a core solution throughout our 70 year history from the days where we used to manufacture spinning wheels and components. Our experience and machining capacity is one of the largest in the UK and has enabled us to manufacture large woodturnings for projects such as Euro Disney, Bluewater Shopping Centre and major hotel contracts across the UK.”

He continued, “Iroko is normally specified for external projects, however D30 structural grade Oak is actually one of the most durable timbers on the market. But as with any external timber application, the finished product will need to be correctly treated and maintained to protect the timber and maintain structural strength.”

DDA Handrails For Commercial Offices

Haldane UK has manufactured and installed these stunning American White Oak profiled DDA handrails for a major financial institution that was carrying out refurbishment works to a branch in the North of England.

Faced with existing metalwork which featured a wrapped plastic handrail, the client decided to return the staircase to its former glory by reinstating the timber handrail on the metalwork and installing a wall rail to meet the DDA Handrails regulations.

Haldane manufactured the 75mm x 63mm profile from American White Oak and formed the continuous spiral handrail using its 5 axis CNC technology creating a wreathed open cap to provide the perfect finishing touch.

Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained “The investments we have made in our programming and production departments are enabling us to be extremely cost-effective on smaller projects that we knew we struggled to compete on a few years ago.”

He continued, “These investments are now paying dividends and enabling us to increase our presence in new markets such as shopfitting and furniture where we have already made great inroads in the last few months.”

Timber Handrails For Shopping Centre

Haldane UK, the market leader in the manufacture and installation of specialist handrails and glazing beads, has once again proved its dominance of the retail sector by securing the contract to provide handrails for the new Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre in Edinburgh.

Haldane was contracted to manufacture handrails for the main mall and food court of the shopping centre, which will open on October 8th. The company supplied and installed over 817m of American white oak in the main mall, fashioned into straight, curved and spiralled handrails by their cutting-edge 5-axis CNC technology. This technology was also used to manufacture the food court’s 95m of straight and mitred handrails, in the same wood.

Haldane also supplied the shopping centre with 151m of external handrails. With the increasing need for companies to be environmentally friendly, Haldane was asked to manufacture these handrails out of guariuba. Not only is this wood durable and hardwearing, but it is also FSC®  accredited, which means that the timber is from sustainable forests. It was also shaped using the 5-axis CNC router, and the Haldane team was on hand to advise on sections and joints, ensuring that the final product was as close as possible to the given specification.

Forrester Adam, Managing Director of Haldane, said: “Wood is becoming more and more popular, and offers a warm and comfortable alternative to the plastic look usually associated with shopping centres. Ocean Terminal was an exciting development for us to work on, and we are really pleased with the outcome. The internal handrails are stunning, but the icing on the cake is the external handrail. Customers are becoming more and more aware of global issues, and the environmental impact of using wood, so we were delighted to play our part by advising on the use of guariuba. It proves once again that no matter what the nature of the contract, we can come up with the goods.”
