Luxury Timber Handrail for London Home

Haldane UK has added its unique finishing touch to the transformation of a luxury residential property, which was led by the multi-award-winning, London and Prague-based Interior Architecture and Interior Design studio misch_MISCH.

One of the highlights of the stunning three-storey mews in Battersea is the feature helical staircase. Haldane UK was responsible for bringing the creative process to life by manufacturing and installing a continuous 70 x 40 elliptical handrail in Sapele, which was to be French polished to achieve a piano black finish in keeping with the interior design.

The handrail incorporated over 9 linear metres of bespoke continuous handrail, which required millimetre accuracy to sit perfectly on the slender black metal spindles.

The staircase also features sections of flat, curved handrail and straight handrail, as well as 180 degree wreathed bends to achieve the flawless continuous finish.

Replacement Handrail for Scottish Refurbishment Project

Haldane UK has added its touch of luxury to a superb refurbishment project for a luxury project in Carnoustie by manufacturing and supplying a replacement timber handrail for the entrance hall.

Working closely with the interior designer and the onsite joiner, Haldane UK carried out a detailed site survey of the existing metal balustrade.

This provides a high resolution 3D digital representation, enabling the Haldane UK design team to understand all the slight imperfections that come with historic balustrades.

With their expertise in CNC timber machining, Haldane UK ensured the finished handrail “smoothed” any small bumps, lumps and blemishes in the metalwork for an absolutely flawless finish.

The handrails, comprising of the straight rail, spiraling transitions and wreathed volutes were manufactured in Sapele and dry jointed in the Haldane UK factory before being supplied to the onsite joiner for installation.

These were then completed perfectly with a Farrow and Ball finish to create the stunning look of luxury.

Commenting on the project, the interior designer, Caroline Windsor on Windsor 29, commented, “Haldane was very prompt and professional. The whole process was very straightforward and easy, from the initial enquiry to arranging for the surveyor to come out and measure, and the new bespoke handrail arrived on site a few weeks later.

It was installed easily, fitting perfectly and transformed the old staircase to look better than ever before. I am delighted with the look and quality of the end result and would not hesitate to use you again on any future projects.”

Handrails Edinburgh Usher Hall

Haldane UK has manufactured and installed almost 150 linear metres of its stunning Sapele handrails in Edinburgh’s Usher Hall for the stunning spiral staircase to the rear of the historic building.

Working in conjunction with Edwards Engineering who were the architectural metalworkers on the project, Haldane used its advanced digitising technology to measure and plot the exact flow of the core rail that the timber handrail would sit on.

And demonstrating that even a simple 45mm diameter can look stunning, Haldane precision manufactured the spiral and curved handrail to the rear staircase and its expert installation teams ensured a perfect finish that is worthy of a building with such a reputation.

Such was the quality of the works that Haldane was then appointed to manufacture and install the timber handrails and transition components to the entrance area.

Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained “We have been delivering complex, continuous handrails since 1992 and have established unrivalled experience and knowledge in this area which enables us to take on any job with full confidence that we will be able to deliver on our promises.”

He continued, “It is one thing to have the survey equipment but the real skill involved is being able to take the information we produce from the digitiser and smooth out the inevitable bumps that metalwork can throw up at the programming and machining stages to prevent additional works on site.”

Staircase Refurbishment Devon

Haldane UK has completed the refurbishment of a 2 storey staircase in a luxury home in Devon, removing the existing post to post stair and replacing it with a fully continuous Sapele handrail, slimline timber spindles and volute newels.

The client had been looking to change his existing traditional staircase with a contemporary design that would open up the area and allow more natural light from the feature window.

The large newel posts and spindles were replaced with tapered 35mm spindles with only two 50mm volute newels providing the structural support to the handrail at the bottom of the staircase.

The continuous handrail featuring a 70 x 50mm handrail profile flows perfectly up the tight turning staircase using a combination of 180 degree raking to raking wreaths and 90 degree raking to horizontal wreaths.

Haldane also created a stunning feature to the base of the staircase, replacing the existing bullnose tread with a new scrolled bullnose tread to mirror the shape and turn of the wreath volutes.

Hardwood Handrail Replacement

Haldane UK has transformed the staircase in a luxury home by replacing the traditional cross banded handrail with a new profiled hardwood handrail.

The client was refurbishing the entire home and was looking to return the staircase to its former glory with a helical handrail which was an exact replica of the original.

After carrying out a full 3D survey of the core rail, Haldane UK manufactured the Sapele handrail measuring 70 x 57mm with an elegant traditional profile which twists through 180 degrees before levelling out on the first floor landing.

Haldane used their expertise in 5 axis CNC machining to manufacture the spiral handrail, transitions and 90 degree to horizontal wreath which flowed seamlessly into the straight handrail before finishing perfectly with the wreath volute.

Haldane UK’s Managing Director, Forrester Adam, explained, “The biggest challenge with these types of projects is ensuring the profile on the handrail is maintained whilst it twists through the spiral and the complex components.”

He continued, “We have continued to invest in our CNC technology from the software at the front end through to our latest 3D Automated Technology which has transformed our levels of precision and capacity.”

Staircase Regulations For Commercial Property

Haldane UK has manufactured and installed this Sapele Handrail for a property in Glasgow which had been converted from residential to an office development and therefore required to meet with the staircase regulations for commercial property.

As the staircase was 1300mm in width, way beyond the maximum width of 1000mm as specified under Part K of the Building Regulations which apply to commercial buildings.

Haldane manufactured the 70 x 58mm profiled handrails to match the existing handrail to run from the ground floor to the second storey.

To ensure the handrail remained continuous up each flight of staircase, Haldane used a combination straight and spiral handrail together with transition pieces and 90 degree raking to raking wreath.

The timber handrails were installed on brass brackets and featured profiled ends.
